Wix migration

Migrating from Wix to a Hand-Coded Site

For small business owners - tradies, dental practices, allied health, accounting firms - who built fast on Wix and now want off the platform. You'll own your site outright, stop the $17 to $55 AUD/month subscription, and hit 90+ PageSpeed (measured on Google PageSpeed Insights desktop at delivery). Wix doesn't allow a clean code export, so we rebuild content manually, set up 301 redirects, and preserve your SEO.

Why people leave Wix

The specific pain points that bring Wix users to us.

These are the concrete platform constraints small businesses cite when they migrate off Wix.

  • Mobile PageSpeed floors below 70

Wix's editor and builder JavaScript loads on every visitor request, not just in the editor. That overhead floors mobile PageSpeed in the 50 to 70 range across most templates. For local searchers on phones, that translates directly to load delays and bounces - particularly for tradies and emergency services where speed of contact matters.

  • $17 to $55 AUD/month forever

Wix subscription tiers in AUD start around $17/month and rise to roughly $55/month for higher-feature plans. Three years on a Core or Business plan is $600 to $2,000 with nothing left as an asset if you cancel. You're renting the site indefinitely.

  • No clean code export

Wix is the most restrictive of the major builders for export. There's no HTML or template export. Page text and images come out via manual copy or scraping. Wix Bookings does not export bookings data in a usable form. If you ever leave, you leave with content only - no code, no design, no structure.

  • Limited JSON-LD schema control

Wix exposes basic title and description SEO fields and some schema templates, but custom JSON-LD (LocalBusiness with full hours, Service nested under LocalBusiness, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, Review aggregateRating) needed for local pack ranking is constrained. For a Wix-hosted dental clinic or accountant trying to compete on suburb keywords, the schema ceiling becomes the ranking ceiling.

  • Drag-and-drop hits design walls

Wix's drag-and-drop is flexible at first, then walls appear: layout combinations the template doesn't support, font pairings the platform restricts, section structures that don't behave on mobile. Moving to a different Wix template means rebuilding inside Wix from scratch.

  • Site goes dark if billing fails

If your Wix subscription lapses - billing error, expired card, or a decision to stop paying - the live site goes offline. With a hand-coded site on your own Cloudflare Pages account, your static files keep serving regardless of who built them.

Migration honesty

What carries over - and what doesn't.

A clean look at what survives the Wix migration intact, and what changes. Wix's limited export means more is rebuilt manually than with other platforms.

What carries over

  • ✓ All page copy and body content (manually rebuilt)
  • ✓ All blog post bodies (via Wix Blog Manager export)
  • ✓ All images you've uploaded (re-optimised to WebP)
  • ✓ Your existing domain
  • ✓ SEO authority and Google rankings (via 301 redirects)
  • ✓ Brand assets - logo, colour palette, type direction
  • ✓ Form submission destination (email, CRM, webhook)

What doesn't carry over

  • × The Wix template and Editor X layout (you get a hand-coded design instead)
  • × The Wix Editor itself (you'll edit content via PagesCMS)
  • × Wix Apps and Marketplace add-ons (replaced with web-standard equivalents)
  • × Wix Bookings (replaced with HotDoc, Calendly, or Acuity)
  • × Wix Stores (replaced with Shopify or static product pages)
  • × Wix Forms (replaced with a static-site form handler)
  • × Velo by Wix custom code (audited and rebuilt as static JS where it still matters)

The migration process

Seven steps from Wix to live hand-coded site.

No surprises. Every step is timed, scoped, and reviewed with you before the next one starts.

  1. 1 Discovery and scoping call Free 30-minute call. We audit your current Wix site, list every page, identify which Wix Apps need replacement (Bookings, Stores, Forms), agree the package tier, and fix the price.
  2. 2 Content audit and URL mapping We crawl your current Wix site, list every page (including Wix-generated /post/ and /service-page/ URLs), and map each old URL to its new destination. Pages that don't earn traffic get archived or consolidated.
  3. 3 Content export (Wix-specific caveat) Wix doesn't allow a clean HTML or template export. We extract content via Wix Blog Manager (for posts), manual page copy, image download from Wix Media Manager, and Wix Stores export for products. More manual than the other platforms - same approach any migration off Wix has to take.
  4. 4 Hand-coded rebuild 1 to 3 weeks depending on tier. Hand-coded HTML, CSS, JavaScript. WebP images. JSON-LD schema. PagesCMS connected to your GitHub repo. Wix Apps are replaced with web-standard equivalents during this stage.
  5. 5 Preview and revisions You see the new site on a staging URL before anything goes live. Round of revisions, content updates, copy tweaks. We confirm PageSpeed hits 90+.
  6. 6 DNS cutover and 301 redirects Point DNS at Cloudflare Pages. Activate 301 redirects from old Wix URLs (including /post/ and /service-page/ paths) to the new hand-coded URLs so existing Google rankings and link equity transfer.
  7. 7 Cancel Wix (after 7 days stable) Only cancel Wix after the new site has been live and serving correctly for at least 7 days. Avoids any window where the live URL is offline before Google has indexed the new site.

SEO continuity

Will I lose my Google rankings when I migrate?

This is the question that stops most Wix users from migrating. The answer is no - not if URL mapping and 301 redirects are implemented properly. Google's own documentation treats a 301 redirect as a near-full pass of link equity from the old URL to the new one.

Wix URLs often include path segments like /post/ for blog content and /service-page/ for service listings, which change in the rebuild. We build the URL map before the rebuild starts. At DNS cutover the redirects activate in Cloudflare Pages (via the _redirects file) and existing inbound links keep working.

Serene Family Dental's PageSpeed went from 45 to 91 after their migration (measured on Google PageSpeed Insights desktop at delivery), and search rankings held through the cutover. Faster site, same rankings, no subscription.

A real migration

Serene Family Dental - migrated to 91 PageSpeed.

Serene Family Dental came to us with a slow, template-driven website. It was scoring 45/100 on PageSpeed Insights, wasn't optimised for mobile, and had no clear online booking flow. Their team had no time to manage it and weren't getting value from it.

We mapped every URL, rebuilt the content manually, and shipped a hand-coded site - no platform, no subscription. PageSpeed scored 91 at delivery. They edit content via PagesCMS when needed. Search rankings transferred via 301 redirects through the cutover.

"We had been putting up with our old website for too long - it was slow, hard to update, and we weren't happy with how it represented our practice. Param rebuilt it from scratch and it's been a completely different experience. Faster, cleaner, and our patients comment on it."

Pricing

Migration cost is your tier price plus a small import fee.

Packages lean from $799 (Lean - 5 pages, about 2 weeks), $1,500 (Starter - 15 essential pages), $2,500 (Growth - 35 pages, blog setup), $4,500 (Scale - up to 100 pages, multi-location). Migration cost is typically the tier you'd choose anyway, plus a small migration-content-import fee that we quote on the scoping call. Wix migrations carry a slightly higher import fee than other platforms because Wix doesn't allow a clean code export, so more content is rebuilt manually.

Migration questions

What people ask before migrating off Wix.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I migrate from Wix?

No - not if we handle the URL mapping and 301 redirects properly. Wix URLs often include /post/ or /service-page/ path segments that change in the rebuild. Before launch we list every existing Wix URL and map each one to its new destination. At cutover we activate 301 redirects in Cloudflare Pages so link equity and rankings transfer to the new URLs. Google treats 301s as a near-full pass of authority.

How long does a Wix migration take?

From scoping call to live site is typically 2 to 4 weeks. Wix takes a bit longer than other migrations because Wix doesn't allow a clean code export, so content is rebuilt manually rather than imported in bulk. Starter (15 essential pages) is about 2 to 3 weeks. Growth (35 pages) about 3 to 4 weeks. Scale (up to 100 pages) about 4 to 5 weeks.

Can I keep my domain when I leave Wix?

Yes. Your domain is separate from your Wix subscription. We point your DNS at Cloudflare Pages (where the new hand-coded site is hosted) and your existing domain keeps working. If your domain is registered through Wix itself, we move it to a standard registrar like Hover or Namecheap during the migration so you control it directly.

What happens to my Wix forms, bookings, and shop during the migration?

Wix Forms submissions move to a static-site form handler (Cloudflare Workers, Formspree, or a direct email endpoint). Wix Bookings is replaced with the booking tool that fits your industry - HotDoc or HealthEngine for dental, Calendly for service businesses, Acuity for studios. Wix Stores is replaced with Shopify (we offer Shopify builds) or static product pages on the hand-coded site, depending on volume and scope.

What if my Wix site has more pages than your tier covers?

We size the tier to the actual page count. Scale covers up to 100 pages. If you're beyond that - for example a Wix site with hundreds of blog posts - we either move you to a custom-quoted tier, or we audit which posts actually earn traffic and consolidate or archive the rest. The scoping call covers exact page counts so the quote is honest.

When do I cancel my Wix subscription?

Not until the new hand-coded site has been live and stable for at least 7 days. We do DNS cutover first, confirm 301 redirects are firing correctly, check the new site is serving and indexing properly, and only then do you cancel Wix. This protects against any window where the live site is offline before Google has fully recognised the new URLs.

Can I export everything from Wix, or do I lose content?

Wix is the most restrictive of the major builders for export. There is no clean HTML or template export. Wix Blog Manager allows a manual content export of blog post bodies. Page text and images come out via manual copy or scraping. Wix Stores has its own export. Wix Bookings does not export bookings data in a usable form. We treat the Wix migration as a content-and-images move rather than a code-and-design move - which is the same approach any migration off Wix has to take.
